From the ICQE Planning committee:

We are pleased to announce that the CFP is now available for the Second International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE20), which will take place 24-27 October 2020 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, USA.

ICQE brings together scholars from any discipline interested in conducting rich qualitative analyses at scale. QE techniques have been used to understand human thought, behavior, and interaction in a variety of fields, including learning sciences, anthropology, psychology, digital humanities, and systems engineering. The goal of the conference is to support a vibrant community of researchers seeking to improve how we make meaning from big data.

The CFP is included below, and more information is available on the conference website http://www.icqe20.org.

We hope you will join us in Malibu to share ideas, methods, resources and inspiration as we continue to build the QE community!

Call for Proposals: ICQE20

24-27 October 2020, Malibu, California, USA

Submissions due 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time (GMT-7), 15 May 2020

The Second International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE20) will provide an international forum for researchers to present work, learn new methodological techniques, and network with other scholars working in the new and growing field of quantitative ethnography (QE).

Building on the tremendous success of ICQE19, we encourage work from any discipline, which can include (but is not limited to):

New and innovative techniques for QE, including network analysis, automated coding, and approaches to reliability and validity of quantitative ethnographic analyses

Studies of the relationship between different techniques or methods for conducting QE analyses

Extension of QE techniques to new types of data, fields of study, or research questions

Empirical QE results, whether preliminary, exploratory, or confirmatory

New theoretical issues in QE or reexamination of existing theoretical frameworks

Formative work that describes prospective thinking about planned QE studies

The primary criteria are that work being presented is theoretically and methodologically thoughtful and sound, and helps build the QE community by sharing ideas, methods, resources, and inspiration.

Submission Information

ICQE20 will accept the following types of submission:

Papers (12-15 pages): Papers are intended for mature work that requires in-depth explanations of conceptual background, methodology, data, argumentation, and/or findings. Accepted papers will be published in the official proceedings.

Posters (4 pages): Posters are intended for formative work. The four-page poster abstract should identify the aspects of the work that will likely lead to productive discussions with conference participants in a poster session, including figures exemplifying the visual support to be provided for these discussions in the poster. Poster abstracts will be published in the proceedings supplement.

Symposia (8 pages total): Symposia consisting of 3-6 scholars are intended for conveying larger ideas or findings about a specific issue in QE. Symposium proposals will be evaluated based on their capacity to address larger topics, controversies, or challenges of interest to the QE community. Symposium proposals should clearly articulate: (a) the overall focus of the symposium; (b) brief descriptions of the content and significance of each scholar’s contribution; and (c) how the collective contributions will enhance understanding of some larger issue in the QE community. Symposium descriptions will be published in the proceedings supplement.

Pre-Conference Workshops (4 pages): Half-day workshops are intended to help participants learn or improve QE theories, methods, or skills, and may also be structured as tutorials on particular QE tools or techniques. Workshop proposals will be evaluated based on their capacity to facilitate shared knowledge-building around issues of interest to the QE community. Workshop proposals should clearly articulate: (a) the overall focus of the workshop and why it will benefit members of the QE community; (b) the target audience for the workshop; (c) the schedule of activities accompanied by a brief description of each activity; and (d) the expected outcomes of the workshop, including any deliverables or follow-up activities that extend beyond the conference itself. Workshop descriptions will be published in the proceedings supplement.

ISLS Conference Travel Scholarship 2020

The goal of the ISLS conference travel scholarship is to support scientists in the field of the learning sciences who live and work in regions of the world that are not represented at our annual conferences (i.e., ICLS and CSCL) to attend the conference. At the moment, we have significant gaps in membership from African, and Central and South American countries. We also have underrepresentation in some southern European countries where we know that learning sciences programs exist. ISLS will put its priority on the support for scientists from the underrepresented regions. However, the society will also consider the possibility of the support for scientists who may be affected by conditions that make their travels difficult to the conference site, if the funding is available.

To increase the diversity of the Society’s membership, we are soliciting applications for a conference scholarship to be awarded to successful applicants in the amount of $500 - $1500.

Applicants are asked to submit a 2-page electronic document that fulfills the criteria listed below as well as a current CV.

The application process will open February 11, 2020 and close March 1, 2020. Applicants will be notified of the result of their application by March 22, 2020.

The 2-page application should include:

Proof that the applicant has submitted a conference proposal as an author or co-author, and/or show that they are a graduate student, faculty member, or professional in a learning sciences research organization who has not attended an ISLS conference in the past. Proof of proposal submission can be in the form of an email response appended to the 2-page application. Proof that the applicant is part of a learning sciences research organization who has not attended this conference in the past can be in the form of a short letter from the student’s advisor or from a faculty member’s department chair appended to the 2-page application.

A description of the applicant’s geographic location as being underrepresented in participation in ISLS conferences (e.g., South and Central America including Mexico, and Africa). Applicants who currently live and work in such a place will be given priority, but others in another circumstance described under #3 will also be considered.

Explanation of need for travel funds, e.g., few travel resources from the applicant’s underrepresented home institution, cost of travel, policy issue, etc.

Information about how the conference attendance will impact the applicant’s ongoing research and professional work. For example:

The applicant’s research focus and how it is related to the learning sciences

Interest in meeting other learning scientists to network and grow academically

A plan for the applicant to disseminate what they learned at the conference in their local community. How will what is learned at the conference be disseminated, e.g., with local course participants, informal seminars, or reports to their research group?

Please submit your application package to joshima@inf.shizuoka.ac.jp no later than midnight (applicant’s local time) March 1, 2020. Please put “ISLS Travel Scholarship” in the subject line of the email.

For further inquiries, please send correspondence to Jun Oshima at joshima@inf.shizuoka.ac.jp.

Boston College’s Lynch School of Education is delighted to announce the start, in late August, 2019, of our new Masters Program in Learning Engineering. The program will prepare students to design engaging learning experiences that are informed by the learning sciences and incorporate cutting-edge technologies. The program is experiential and interdisciplinary, leveraging the expertise of faculty from across BC’s Lynch School of Education. Throughout the one-year, on-campus program, students complete design challenges, shadow working professionals, take field trips to technology incubators and collaboratories, and intern with local organizations.

At the program’s core are its design studios and reflective seminars. Courses and 1-credit modules are designed to foster learning of how people learn, how to foster learning, how to design for learners, and how to influence a focus on learning among members of a design team. Students use what they are learning to complete their design challenges and participate in their internships. They graduate with a portfolio that showcases the depth and breadth of their design work and demonstrates their capabilities in learner-centered design, leadership, and pedagogical and technological imagination.

In 2018, the ICLS conference is part of the London Festival of Learning, which has two other conferences co-located and running alongside it – the AIED and the Learning@Scale conferences. The whole Festival of Learning runs from 23 – 30 June in central London.

ICLS is a major international event, organized biennially by ISLS, which gathers people involved in all aspects of the field of the learning sciences, including empirical, conceptual, theoretical, design-based, practitioner and policy perspectives. The conference theme for ICLS 2018 is “Rethinking learning in the digital age: making the Learning Sciences count,”. Now more than ever, the learning sciences have a key role to play in unpacking the complexity of the teaching and learning process. AI and Automation in the workplace, including within education, will alter what we need to learn and how we need to teach it. Therefore, as scientists and educators we need to explore learning in real-world settings in an interdisciplinary manner in order to understand how learning may be facilitated both with and without technology. In addition, there is now an additional imperative to guide the commercial development of Educational Technologies to ensure that they are pedagogically sound.

The Learning Sciences are replete with foundational theory and methods that can inform learning both with and without technology, as well as a significant bank of empirical educational evidence that is essential to the effective development of technologies and their uses to support learning. However, with these fast technological developments there is also a growing need for the learning sciences, which can contribute to societies’ understanding of the needs of the real-world, and the challenges and concerns of educators in different educational and cultural contexts. The Learning Sciences are uniquely placed to offer guidance that recognizes and addresses the long-term ambitions for better education as well as the ‘bottom-line’ considerations faced by the practitioners and learners at the front-line.

We encourage papers that build on interdisciplinary research, as well as papers that help to set the programmatic agenda for the future of learning sciences research. In particular, for 2018 we are also looking for papers that illustrate how the learning sciences can impact upon the work of the two co-located conferences: AIED and Learning@Scale, and upon the development of commercial educational technology.

About the conference theme:

The fast paced changes in the workplace, including within education, are altering what we need to learn and how we need to teach it. This situation makes the learning sciences even more important. Learning science can lead the way in helping researchers and practitioners to: unpack the complexity of the learning and teaching process, explore learning in real-world settings, and understand how learning may be facilitated both with and without technology. The theory and methods of the Learning Sciences, along with their substantial body of empirical evidence put the Learning Sciences in a unique position to offer guidance and insight to wide body of educational stakeholders. We welcome papers that aim to improve our understanding of learning, the impact of the modern world on learning and alternative views of learning. We also encourage papers that build on interdisciplinary research, as well as papers that help to set the programmatic agenda for the future of learning sciences research. In particular, for 2018 we are also looking for papers that illustrate how the learning sciences can impact upon the work of the two co-located conferences: AIED and Learning@Scale, and upon the development of commercial educational technology.

ISLS Conference Travel Scholarship 2017

The goal of the ISLS conference travel scholarship is to support scientists in the field of the learning sciences who live and work in regions of the world that are not represented at our annual conferences (i.e., ICLS and CSCL) to attend the conference. At the moment, we have significant gaps in membership from African, and Central and South American countries. We also have underrepresentation in some southern European countries where we know that learning sciences programs exist.

To increase the diversity of the Society’s membership, we are soliciting applications for a conference scholarship to be awarded to successful applicants in the amount of $500 - $1000.

Applicants are asked to submit a 2-page electronic document that fulfills the criteria listed below as well as a current CV.

The application process will open February 10, 2017 and close March 3, 2017. Applicants will be notified by March 30, 2017.

Applicants must currently live and work in such a place.

Explanation of need for travel funds, e.g., few travel resources from the applicant’s home institution, cost of travel, etc.

Please submit your application package to vanaalst@hku.hk no later than midnight (applicant’s local time) March 3, 2017. Please put “ISLS Travel Scholarship” in the subject line of the email.

For further inquiries, please send correspondence to Jan van Aalst at vanaalst@hku.hk.
